Warning: You can't Jailbreak using Oracle VMBox (primarily because it doesn't support USB connections, however if you can bypass that, then maybe yes, you can) but
it's not really worth the hassle. The way I did it was by creating a bootable
flash drive with Ubuntu and then Jailbreaking using checkra1n.

Steps:

First things first, let's set up the flash drive.

Download Ubuntu ISOs from [https://ubuntu.com/download/desktop]. I used
Ubuntu 20.10.

Download Rufus [https://rufus.ie/].

Set it up! I didn't put any persistence in, but you can, depending if you
do this a lot.

Boot up:

I use an MSI GS-65 Stealth, which is a classic beauty, and so I spam
<kbd>F11</kbd> as soon as the MSI logo comes up. And then choose the flash
drive to boot from. If this doesn't work for you, you may want to change the
boot order of your device. For me it's spamming <kbd>Del</kbd> as soon as
the MSI logo comes up.

You don't have to install Ubuntu. Click on "Try Ubuntu", we're trying to
save some sweet time.

Flex your terminal skillz:

Hurray, fire up the terminal (press
Ctrl + Alt + T
). And let's follow these steps by Reddit user
u/xdhelicopter
the link to the original article can be accessed here.

Run these commands line by line:

echo "deb https://assets.checkra.in/debian /" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
sudo apt-key adv --fetch-keys https://assets.checkra.in/debian/archive.key
sudo apt update
sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu $(lsb_release -sc) main universe"
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libncurses5-dev
sudo apt-get install libirecovery3
sudo apt-get install checkra1n

Now, go to checkra1n's official website (please be-ware of phishing sites) https://checkra.in/releases/#all-downloads and click on "Download for Linux (CLI, x86_64)". At the time of writing this, Checkra1n's version is 0.11.0 beta. Go to your Downloads folder, right click checkra1n > Properties ... and copy it's path.

Get back to terminal and enter this (obviously change it according to your path):

echo "deb https://assets.checkra.in/debian /" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
chmod a+rwx /home/ubuntu/Downloads/checkra1n

However, after executing the last command it won't throw up anything, which means we're good.

Running checkra1n using terminal (not recommended)

Oh, you're such a brave heart, aren't you? Enter the following in the terminal:

cd Downloads
sudo ./checkra1n

There are two types of people in this world: the bees and flies. Bees are smart, and flies are dumb.

If a bee gets trapped in a bottle, it'll fly straight up, towards light and get out. The fly flies into the side a thousand times, go round and round till it finds its way out by chance. Pretty dumb, right?

But, what happens if the bottle is flipped upside down?

The bee still flies upward, but there's no way out. The fly keeps trying by going round and round till it finds its way out through the bottom. The bee dies in the bottle.

In some situations, what we can't see is that someone's turned the bottle upside down, and that sometimes you need to think as a fly.

From what most people around me can tell, I'd always had a knack of coding. And design. Thus, I decided to try my luck getting a job as a Creative Design Lead for UI / UX development at one of the local startups around. I'd been running an architectural design firm Ansh Sharma Architects for a while now, so I wanted something that could take my mind off.

I'd heard from a good friend of mine that working at startups was super-cool and fun, and some of them even offered equity along with a stipend, which could really pay off if the startup took off. I only had a month long break at hand, so although I dropped the idea of bagging an equity, here's what I've to share:

The equity equation:

One of the earliest entrepreneurial minds at Silicon Valley, Paul Graham, laid out an equation which could help you estimate how much equity you could ask for while being hired.

1/
(1-n)

You should give up n% of your company if what you trade it for improves your average outcome enough that the (100 - n)% you have left is worth more than the whole company was before.

In the general case, if n is the fraction of the company you're giving up, the deal is a good one if it makes the company worth more than 1/(1 - n).

HRs always look for making a profit on your hire. Let's suppose you've read Graham's article and are asking for 5%. And so, if you could convince the founders that you could bring to the table what could increase the average outcome of the company by:

1/
1-0.05

≈ 1.052, which is 5.2%, you win.

We, however left out the salary that you're going to get paid, which we could think as a trade off against equity. So, let's assume the company you're interviewing at is valued at INR 2 Cr., and you're asking 600000 per year. Let the amount the company spends on you be 1.5 times your salary (which includes any overheads). That gives us salary and overheads to be 900000.

900000/
20000000

equals 4.5% and so you should just be asking for 0.5% to reach your target of 5%. As you can see the equity component you can take increases when you decrease your salary, so it is up for you to decide which one you should lean heavily on.

As for me, I went in for salary. I'll be posting an article the following week about negotiating salaries, so make sure you enter your email address to subscribe to my blog. It's free.

Penguins’ have got a nifty organ that magically turns seawater drinkable. Caveats being it’s a gland not an organ, and when it doesn’t directly converts seawater to freshwater, it filters out salt from their blood.

It’s known to us as the supraorbital gland, and it’s present in almost all marine birds. You can tell if you’ve ever seen a crusty film around the nasal openings near their beaks.

They need this gland because had it been their kidneys doing all the filtering out, they could only successfully manage to pull out urine which is at 1/3 rd the concentration of sea water. And salty blood isn’t a good thing, the body starts taking water from the tissues and it rapidly spirals down to dehydration.

This gland is located between the eyes and above the nose. And it works just like the kidney does; in a process known as counter-current exchange.

Basically, blood and the fluid in which the salt is supposed to drain flows in opposite directions, which ensures that the blood will always remain saltier than the duct fluid and hence osmosis continues to occur.

As a simple analogy, you’ve got two trains (blood express and duct fluid express) running opposite to each other, and you’ve got salty passengers in blood express (who’re actually ninjas) and they’re gonna jump to the duct fluid express when they see an empty coach.

Since, the trains are running in opposite directions, once the salty passengers are in the duct fluid express, they’re only going to come across filled up coaches in blood express, and so there won’t be any jumping back and forth.

Owning how higher sodium intakes can lead to heart diseases, maybe one day penguins can help us unlock biotechnology of the future paving highly efficient ways of filtering seawater.

Sometimes when you're trying to copy a large file, say over 4 GB, you might get the error "File too large for destination file system" even though your storage drive might actually have more free space available. It might be possible that your storage device is formatted with FAT32 file system, because FAT32 supports individual files only upto 4 GB and total volumes upto 2 TB.

Microsoft started using NTFS filesystems as an alternative back in 2001 (good old days of Windows XP) for its internal hard drives but USB flash drives even today come formatted with a FAT32 filesystem.

Fixes:

1. (Easiest / No downloading of additional software required)

Make sure the flash drive is empty, copy the contents if need be to a local disk on your computer.

CAUTION: This will delete the data present in your removable drive. Please ensure that you copy it to a local disk in your computer.

Step 1: Right click on the USB drive > Format...

Step 2: Choose the file system as NTFS and click on the Start button.

2. Split the file up into volumes smaller pieces, each piece should individually be under 4 GB:

This can be used for large video files, which you wouldn't really mind being split up. You'll need a archiver such as WinRAR or 7-zip. Here's how you do this using 7-zip, the steps remain more or less the same with other software.

Step 1: Right click on the file you want to copy into the flash drive > 7-Zip > Add to archive...

Step 2: There will be an option on the lines of Split to volumes, bytes:. Enter a suitable number, remember that you need to keep the individual file size under 4 GB.

am from the village of Parra in Goa, hence we are called Parrikars. My village is famous for its watermelons. When I was a child, the farmers would organise a watermelon-eating contest at the end of the harvest season in May. All the kids would be invited to eat as many watermelons as they wanted.

Years later, I went to IIT Mumbai to study engineering. I went back to my village after 6.5 years. I went to the market looking for watermelons. They were all gone. The ones that were there were so small. I went to see the farmer who hosted the watermelon-eating contest. His son had taken over. He would host the contest but there was a difference.

When the older farmer gave us watermelons to eat he would ask us to spit out the seeds into a bowl. We were told not to bite into the seeds. He was collecting the seeds for his next crop. We were unpaid child labourers, actually. He kept his best watermelons for the contest and he got the best seeds which would yield even bigger watermelons the next year.

His son, when he took over, realised that the larger watermelons would fetch more money in the market so he sold the larger ones and kept the smaller ones for the contest. The next year, the watermelons were smaller, the year later even small. In watermelons the generation is one year. In seven years, Parra’s best watermelons were finished. In humans, generations change after 25 years. It will take us 200 years to figure what we were doing wrong while educating our children.
Mark had just gotten into MIT in Cambridge and he began mining cryptocurrencies more or less by accident. In November 2016, Mark stumbled upon NiceHash, which is an online marketplace where you can mine Cryptocurrencies for willing buyers. He started small, with a desktop computer topped up with a graphics card.

Within a few weeks, he had recovered the Rs. 8000 ($120) cost of his card, and earned yet another Rs. 13,500 ($200) which he used for buying another one.

e went up to his professor and asked for his old desktop systems which he had lying dormant. Because when equipped with a graphics card, those 'garbage' PCs worked just fine for mining. Mark switched from NiceHash to mining ether, which was then the most popular Bitcoin alternative.

Every time he mined enough ether to cover the cost, he bought a new graphics card and traded the leftover currency into Bitcoin for safekeeping. By 2017, he was running 7 computers and mining ether round the clock from his dorm room.

By September, his profits totaled 1 Bitcoin, which was $4,500 (approx. 3 lakhs) at that time. And just about four months later, when Bitcoin blew up and he'd diversified his portfolio, he had amassed well over 13 lakhs ($20,000) in digital cash.

What helped him?

In typical mining scenarios, electricity costs take up the highest fraction of operational costs. Mark benefitted because he operated his rig at his dorm, and MIT doesn't charge hostellers for electricity bills. The electricity and internet are part of the tuition.

What is mining?

Paper currencies are issued by the bank and thus they come to us printed as a physical entity, which we call banknotes. Cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin, on the other hand, does not come in a physical form. This creates a major risk from hackers, who can thus create Bitcoins from theoretically nothing.

Bitcoin mining is a way to keep transactions secure. Imagine a public ledger which has records of every transaction made through Bitcoin. This is what is called as Blockchain. In this ledger, you can't remove entries, and so to make a change you'll have to add another entry.

To keep Blockchain secure, it's distributed and hosted by various computers all over the world, and those computers are known as miners.
How did you actually make plans to come to Varanasi? Is it the place itself, or is it the kind of work that you do?

A: It’s actually related to my research because I’m working on temple architecture. So, for my Ph.D., I looked at the temples in Delhi, and then I got a chance to come to Varanasi by finding a residency so now I’m looking at the temples in Varanasi.

That’s so nice. So since you’ve lived a Delhi for quite a long time, could you tell us how do you find the culture of Delhi different from the culture of Varanasi?

A: Oh, it’s very different! Delhi is a metropolitan city. There are lots of people coming from different places, lots of facilities are available and the city itself is much bigger than Varanasi. The way people move and live in Delhi is very different than they do in Varanasi. In Delhi, people are very busy and concerned about their own work.

There aren't many rituals happening. I mean, there are rituals happening but they aren’t deeply rooted in the city unlike they are here, in Varanasi, I won’t talk about the very old Islamic parts of Delhi, they’re different. In Varanasi, people in a family have been staying together for generations, so there are things like food, power, culture, and music which have very old cultural roots in the city.

As an architectural enthusiast, can you throw some light on the underlying layers of fabric that intricately yet beautifully weave the city of Varanasi?

A: Although I’m not really sure about what is it that you’re referring to, but yes, this is also a difference between the city of Varanasi and Delhi. In Delhi, especially the southern parts of Delhi have very wide and paved roads. So the urban fabric is very different from the fabric that you have in Varanasi. Most of the city, at least the old parts of the city is small galis, so you can’t actually move through the cities with cars, you’ve to walk through the galis.

The first time you change cities of residence, you find yourself in a cultural shock, which can be either due to a difference in your expectations of the place and reality or in the lifestyle being different from your former place of residence. What were those shocks, and how did you manage to cope with them?

A: At first there was a huge difference, coming from a very small village in Germany, which had 500 people living in the village, so the difference was not only, like a change of country, or a change of setting, but generally, coming from a village and moving to a city where there are millions of people was a big change. In Delhi, everything is within a walking distance. In terms of living, I used to live in a hostel, which means the facilities I had were very basic, I didn’t have my own kitchen and I had to share my bathroom with 30 to 50 other girls. I wanted to do my Ph.D. so I couldn’t complain!

Coming and staying in Varanasi, of course, is very different because here I have two rooms, my own bathroom, there’s a kitchen where the cook prepares food every day, I’m not used to that kind of luxury, even in Germany I don’t get to stay that comfortably.

Hey curious learner, why not! Everyone wants to have a cool website (along with a fidget spinner) these days. (And no, Amazon isn't giving them together) First we're going to download some cool softwares, which would help you to code faster.
You can try either Notepad++ or Sublime Text. They're both free softwares, and you can download them using these links. I prefer to use Sublime Text for coding in HTML.

Getting started with Sublime Text
The beauty of this editor is the variety of shortcuts it has to offer. Let's not waste time. There's this way to just open up Sublime Text and get started with coding; and then, there's this way which is likely to be beneficial in the future so let's stick with the latter.

Create a folder
Websites have their own separate folder. This makes searching and uploading files to the server easy, and helps us to be organised. So first create a new folder. I'm creating a folder named

ansh
. Next, open Sublime Text and do this:

File menu > Open Folder...

Browse and open your new folder and you're done. Remember this step.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
style="display:block; text-align:center;"
data-ad-layout="in-article"
data-ad-format="fluid"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-9458067125611510"
data-ad-slot="5194230904"></ins>

Create the file
index.html

index.html will be the main file of the website. A front page sort of thing, it's called the homepage. Now, I'm sure you remember the old school typing

...

and so on. We won't type it manually, we'll ask Sublime Text to type it. Here's how:

Press <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>+<kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>P</kbd>

A small box opens up. It's called Command Palette (I didn't know it's called that, I had to look that up just to tell you). Type

sshtml
.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
style="display:block; text-align:center;"
data-ad-layout="in-article"
data-ad-format="fluid"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-9458067125611510"
data-ad-slot="5194230904"></ins>

Basically what you've done is that you've told Sublime Text that the language you're typing is HTML. The
ss
in
sshtml
means set syntax (I knew this).
Now type
<h
(you don't even need to type
html
, just type
h
. As soon as you do that, you'll see a menu like this:

Press <kbd>Tab</kbd> two times and see the magic! Finally, put something between the title tags and the body tags and save the document as
index.html
in your folder. Why don't we match our files? My
index.html
after doing all this looks like this:

Most of the folklore that I keep posting on this blog is from what I can recall as far as my memory allows me to. I had a teacher back in school, Ms. Aryama, who used to teach us Sanskrit, and she oft-times talked about the mirroring nature of human beings; as to how humans are just like mirrors, and how our own behavior can go a long way in influencing the opposite person's reaction to your opinions and beliefs.

So, highly inspired from the saying that goes:

Be the change you want to see in the world. ~ Mahatma Gandhi.
She wanted us to behave in the same manner we wished our colleagues or acquaintances to behave in, in order to get them mirror our own spirit and soul.

I was a fan of this philosophy ever since, but the story she used to narrate this was rather weird, to like it or not, as I usually emphasize, is rather subjective, but the point here is it stuck, and that made all the difference.

A weird story, here goes...

nce a king wanted, as kings usually want, to do something substantial. We all seek an escape from oblivion; art, writing and architecture are merely some ways we can get any close.

He thus contemplated and settled on an idea of arranging a painting competition as a quest to find out the best painter in his kingdom. Time passes him by a few days and he decided upon two finalists that would, for a month each, stay in one of the palace’s luxurious halls as the king’s guest and spend their days painting to win, a prize, of course, and then their is, moral gratification.

But wait, what if they cheat? They could’ve looked at each other’s work because they were in the same hall and so the king decided to put a circular curtain around both of their work-spaces.

Thirty long days, it was autumn, the first painter could’ve been painting drawing conscious inspiration from the window he was near to. We couldn’t really guess what the second painter was up to, though, this guy was rather elusive.

The king walked up to them to decide upon which of the two masterpieces would hang behind the walls of the throne for the others to feast their eyes to. The first painter revealed his work.

Jaw dropping realism and attention was paid even to the minutest of details.
And when the second painter removed his curtains, every single soul present around was flabbergasted. Not a word was spoken for what seemed like eternity. Because what the second painter had drawn, was exactly the same as the first one! In fact, it was actually better.

The second painting had a characteristic shine to it that the first one lacked.

But, it was impossible to cheat! Was one of them sneaking around? Negative, the guards, who were appointed on duty to prevent this mishap, but apparently had failed, confirmed. The king, now confused, frustrated and baffled, took to inquiring the two. The second painter explained what had he been doing for the past month.

I didn't paint anything. All I was doing was polishing the surface I should've been drawing on. I kept on doing this till the curtains were lifted. My canvas, by now, had become a mirror. When this mirror witnessed the first man's work, and because the painting was a masterpiece and of great quality, it absorbed and embraced it.

Which tells us to...

Polish our inner selves to get them to be like mirrors, so that the next time we see a good quality, the mirror within us embraces it and the quality becomes one with our own self.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072617500518186596.post-27466067703143242162018-08-15T00:58:00.000-07:002018-08-17T23:39:15.962-07:00Whom did you appreciate today?

I was out on a walk with a close friend of mine, and it's a tale of that sultry evening in August, which you can only see getting any better when you're bitching about a common classmate that everyone hates.

But, hating is a strong word. And I say we don't usually hate things, ideas or even people. What we perceive as hatred may be just be something or someone that we don't understand. As for me, there was a point of time until which I couldn't appreciate art.

So, I tried to ask him into why'd he think that he hated that guy. Turns out that it was because he didn't even try to appreciate anyone. His remarks were always condescending (Oops!). So, even if my friend had burnt the midnight oil and came up with something outstanding (we're working on models made out of cardboard back then), he would come up to him and remark, "Sheesh! That's nothing to be proud of, anyone could have done that."

Appreciation, I said. How important is it?

Well, there's folklore...

nce upon a time, an old man, probably in his 70s, went up to a famous artist. His tired and weary eyes were devoid of excitement and his pale brown skin displayed some deep and prominent wrinkles.

This young artist, though, was at the zenith of his career, extremely skilled and flamboyant, which made him the best candidate to get an honest critique from.

The old man handed him some paintings he'd been working on the past few days while pleading him that he'll not be offended and he's seeking an honest review. The artist, held his intense stare at the works for a quite a while, and sighed deeply and said, "I'm sorry, but the man who drew this paintings has really no knowledge of what is art. I'm sorry."

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
style="display:block; text-align:center;"
data-ad-layout="in-article"
data-ad-format="fluid"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-9458067125611510"
data-ad-slot="5194230904"></ins>

To this the old man, took out some more works from his torn and worn out bag, and handed them out to the artist, "And what do you think about these?", and one could clearly see the artist's eyes gleaming with a newfound energy. "Wow! Amazing!", he almost jumped out of his seat.

These works are out of the world, whoever this person is, he could become an idol in this field of art, I'm sorry, but is he your grandson?
It was evident that the old man's eyes were becoming wet as he collected his work to put them back in his bag. He answered, almost as a whisper, for he couldn't bring himself to speak,

No, this is me, when I was my grandson's age. I had a natural flair for painting, but no one appreciated my work like you did today. So, I never continued. Only if someone back then said I was good, I could've been an artist extraordinaire.

Which brings us to...
Appreciation can make or break a person's life. And it can make you favoured for taking the time to value someone else's work. Beware, this is difficult, it takes courage to appreciate someone who's doing the same things you're doing, better than you are doing. Perhaps it makes you feel like it’s some sort of a competition. But this shouldn't stop you from appreciating someone. Or should it?

Lastly, when someone appreciates you, be sure that you're accepting it.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072617500518186596.post-50493572948954181552018-08-12T08:22:00.001-07:002018-08-18T18:29:04.011-07:00When I learned about art
Appreciating art was something I wasn't always good about, it all came to me over these years as I went about studying artists and architects alike. But there's this thing around which I couldn't just wrap my head, abstract art. There's this guy named Mark Rothko who is into abstract expressionism. For instance, here's one of Rothko's works, Four Darks in Red (1958).

So, while one of my friends back at my university, School of Planning and Architecture, went about singing praises on how deep a meaning his works hold and how some of them are valued at millions (one of his work was sold for $87 million), I asked myself,

Isn't this something I can do, too? Or, for that matter, we all can, too? What actually is abstract art after all, painting swatches?
This was all happening while we're huddled together in a metro train slithering its way through the subways of the city while we're on our way to an art exhibition at Gallery Threshold (hosted by Ms. Tunty Chauhan) displaying Pandit Khairnar's works which were critiqued by Georgina Maddox.

While we waited in the metro, where the breeziness of air conditioned gusts flowed freely, my friend tried his best to convince me that abstract art can be though of as a stage or a level, and isn't a stage or a level that you can reach when you're just starting out in the field of art, because that's when you'd be testing the waters, and also that's when you're just naive. What made Rothko's work stand out were the fact that they were created by Rothko, because years of exploration has made him achieve a level on which you and me aren't at yet.

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
style="display:block; text-align:center;"
data-ad-layout="in-article"
data-ad-format="fluid"
data-ad-client="ca-pub-9458067125611510"
data-ad-slot="5194230904"></ins>

He even beautifully quoted Picasso!

There is no abstract art. You must always start with something. Afterward you can remove all traces of reality.
We reached where there was a hall, the walls of which proudly displayed works of Khairnar, and while I meditatively tried to engage in a conversation with the works of his abstractness, Pandit Khairnar stood there besides me, albeit silently and still, and it was his works which did all the talking.

Our brain is terribly wired. It forces me to look for forms even when I know I was looking at an abstract art, and so I could see dark patches in his work, which looked almost like spots in his paintings. On inquiring him, he said that they weren't intentional. It's just something that he had in his personality that he later found being transcended into his art. And that's when it struck me.

Beyond the abstraction of the celestial that he consciously wanted to portray, beyond the romance of day and night that he witnessed in the skies, there was a sub-conscious that sneakily made its way into his art forms, and that is what forms the aura of the whole artwork. And also that's the reason why I can't paint a square swatch and sell it for potentially millions, because as of now, my personality cannot descend into my work, it'll only comes with years of exploration.

I couldn't really have learnt this if I hadn't had the chance to see the artist and his works together. I asked him to pose against his favorite work, the one which he felt himself the most attached to, and it was this:

We can't use erasers in our Graphics' Studio. It started when one of our professor asked us the difference between drawing with an ink-pen versus a pencil. Someone pointed out that while using pencils you could erase your mistakes. And this is how we were forbidden from using erasers, they say there are no mistakes in art.

Though it had much to do with the feeling a pencil could deliver; the soft graphite rubbing itself against the rough paper that we draw on, and also the varying intensities and thicknesses you can achieve with the pressure and the angle that you use, the question had me pondering over the actual fear.

What if is all it starts with.

What if I draw my pencil line a bit off?
The problem with our brains is that they are hard-wired to be protective. This, as an artist, can be hampering in our endeavors, but it does apply to other disciplines. Your brain actually keeps you from doing things that can be dangerous, in which case, even dangerous to your personality. Which, is actually good. You're protected by your brain from doing things that are morally wrong because you're a person who is good, who is usually right. But what it does interfere with is it prevents you from exploring, from doing things that you could've been doing.

For example, let's say that you're walking in a dense rain-forest. And you're lost. To add to the misery, you haven't had food since a day. There's a bush with a tasty looking red colored berry. It looks so perfect and delicious, you can't just resist having a bite. But, you've been told to not eat fruits which you have no clue about. So you go on to find a black berry which is familiar. You hate black berries, but you still eat it, because you're afraid to explore a new fruit. Your brain is protective.

It's definitely a one-sided argument that a reasonable person would eat the black fruit instead of a red one, but that's a story, a story when you're in a forest. This isn't a forest, right? Then why the heck are you, now, afraid to try out the red fruit?

From now on, just try to complete your what-ifs.

If my pencil line's a bit off, it wouldn't matter at all, because the person looking at my work wouldn't really know how had I intended to draw the line in the first place.
So, there wasn't anything to fear at all. I threw away my eraser already. Time for you to throw yours.
A few days ago, I found myself in a meeting with the GM, Finances for the Suwalka and Suwalka Group. He's a widely recognized name, and an outstandingly wiser man for that. As I got up, I couldn't help myself to ask him what his philosophy on life was. He gave a short albeit meaningful essence to his words. He asked me to,

Dream big. Dream on, but whatever you dream, never let it be small. Dream the biggest you can and you'll have nothing but success in your hands.
This reminded me of Clotaire Rapaille, a French marketing consultant, whom American corporations pay top dollar (read: $200,000 which is approximately Rs. 1,37,25,000) for correcting their marketing misdemeanors.

Dr. Rapaille was once hired by Jeep, the leading SUV manufacturer in the United States, to hunt down reasons for a rapidly declining revenue from sales. What he came up with, was a bizarre theory. He wanted Jeep to switch back to their earlier designs which featured circular headlamps instead of rectangular ones. Jeep executives agreed, albeit reluctantly, but thanks to the prodigy, the world once again saw sky rocketing sales from the automobile manufacturer.

I read an interview of him at PBS, which you can read here. He started out as a teacher, helping autistic children to learn to speak. When he was delivering a lecture at Geneva University, one of his student asked his father to attend it with him. At the end of the lecture, that student's father came up to him and said, "You know, doctor, I've a client for you.". And he said,"Is it a little boy, little girl, doesn't speak?". "No, no, this is Nestlé.".

Dr. Rapaille was taken aback, but he wasn't scared to live a dream, or as NY Times puts it, he was about to live a dream life which Freud would have envied. Nestlé had spent some of its time conducting surveys in Japan. They handed out free samples of coffee and asked consumers how they liked it. This had been going on for over an year now, and the reviews came out to be positive. Nestlé then decided it'd be safe to invest in the Japanese market and it started with them opening up cafés. Aghast, not a single Japanese soul was to be found wandering inside these newly opened coffee parlors. So, they had asked Dr. Rapaille for assistance.

According to him, marketing is all about gut-thinking. He tells us that when you're born, you're born with a reptilian brain, and after 7 years of age, we have in place the cortex, what most of us think of as being "intelligent". And it has been seen that children usually start learning a foreign language after 7 years of age, and yet they still continue to hold on to their accent. So, for example a child who has been brought up in wartime France, may learn the English language when he grows up, but his imprint of English would be different from a child, who's been brought up in a contrasting environment. If you're, thus, to create an imprint, it'll be best to do it before the cortex starts developing.

How could thus Nestlé expect a child who's been brought up in a culture which favors tea over coffee switch to coffee once he grows up. Dr. Rapaille told Nestlé to start selling sweets that were based on a coffee flavor, coffee flavored toffees and books for children that encouraged coffee drinking. Decades of careful execution of planning, led to wonderful results; between October 2015<span style="background-color: white; color: #545454; font-family: "arial" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;">–September 2016, Japan was the world’s 4th largest consumer of coffee.

What it took was dreams, and careful planning that spanned decades.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7072617500518186596.post-16020802801019138702018-07-22T23:33:00.000-07:002018-07-22T23:33:57.533-07:00When someone appreciates, accept

I can recall a story of a recognized female Indian voice. Those were the days when she was young and her career was starting off and she'd been doing shows on the Indian radio. This had given her enough fame already and this was perhaps the phase where you'd be figuring out how possibly could someone live while being under the limelight. Having booked a seat in the train, as she searched for her seat in the coach, an aged woman had already fixated her gaze upon her, contemplating, as to whether she was the same voice she had heard and seen so much about.

As the young talent took her seat, the aged woman called out to her and she said something on the lines of her confirming who the young girl was and then appreciating her.

The other day I heard you out on the radio. You sing beautifully. Almost every Saturday, I sit with my daughters and we hear you out. I know there are just 7 notes, but your voice, it feels as if you're searching for the 8th.

The young girl was flabbergasted on hearing this. She shied away, blushing and meekly denying that she isn't as good as she was portraying her. "No, no, ma'am...", was all she was saying. The old woman, as she was a wiser soul, scolded the girl.

When someone appreciates you, you should take it. Never deny someone's appreciation. Say something like "Thanks." or "I'm glad you liked it.". If you don't want to take it onto yourself, the best thing to say would be, "It's all God's grace."

It's absolutely okay to be humble, but denying of someone's appreciation isn't humility, it's the lack of self-esteem.

I'm busy doing [some important work of] mine, I request you to do your own [work].

The art of focus.

It's an important skill taught in martial arts.

And can be used in a multitude of areas. When you're at your grandparent's house, and there's a power cut, you've the entire cool and windy night to listen to stories. Stories inspire us, make us a wiser person and urge us to give life, a different perspective. Ah, so here's the one I was told this time:

nce upon a time, in a kingdom far away, a king wanted to appoint a Prime Minister to his court. As it was, and still is, the most important position in the empire, the Prime Minster was required to be a man of supreme intellect.

An entrance exam was organised by the king. Lots and lots of enthusiasts turned up and when the results came out, only 3 candidates were selected for the final test round. After hearing this good news of their selection, these three folks headed out of the king's castle on their way to home.

The only thing they were wishing for was the following day's question paper. Oh how dearly they prayed to Lord to provide them anyhow with at least a mere glimpse of the questions!

Amazingly, the moment they stepped out of the castle, they were taken aback with surprise. Almost all of the hoardings, newspapers, radio (the people who went around from village to village announcing things) talked of the same thing – the following day's question paper. It was out there already!

It went on to read something like this:

Tomorrow, at 10.00 A.M. will report at the castle, from whence the three of you would be led to a chamber. You'll then be locked inside. At the door there will be a lock. You've to open the door. The person who comes out the first will be declared as the Prime Minister by His Highness.

On reaching their abodes, two of those three immediately set out their books and started learning about the types of locks, the mechanisms they work on, the various kinds of puzzles you'll have to solve to open them etc. The third person however quietly went and sat in a corner. Upon asking him, he replied:

I'm busy doing [some important work of] mine, I request you to do your own [work].

Time flew by, in came the silent night. Those two by now had completed most of the literature on locks that was available to them. The third man, however still sat silent. I leave the answer to whether or not he was contemplating life to my dear readers to ponder on.

At 11 P.M. he was again disturbed by the presence of the other two scholarly folks, who once again asked him to study a thing or a two. He again gave the rather monotonous reply of his:

No, I'm doing my work. Please do yours.

Which led them think that he's not suitable for the post of the Prime Minister. Or rather he doesn't want to become one. There's no zeal within him. There's no fire. It's better to leave him alone and continue our studies. And they went back to get immersed in their books.

This man still sat in a corner, and funnily enough because we at this point are expecting something rather extraordinaire, went to sleep. Although his normal bedtime ranged from 11 P.M. to 7 A.M. but that day he chose to wake up at 8 A.M. And that was only to find the book loving mates still studying. Turns out they studied the entire night. They would've slept for around 3 hours or so, if not less.

At 9 A.M. they once again tried to ask him to study, but he remained adamant with his answer. Finally it was time to go for the test.

On their arrival at the castle, they were greeted by the king, who reiterated the question to them. The men were locked and the test commenced. As soon as they saw the lock, the two quickly opened their books to figure out what's the mystery in the lock and how would they be able to open it. The third man however went to a corner and sat quietly. No doubt, he was given crude remarks by them, who urged him to try opening the lock, who knew he could get to be the Prime Minister. Like we expect, he gave his dull reply yet again.

After about half the time it takes to an hour, he stood up, walked to the door, opened it and went to meet the king. The other two was so deeply engrossed in their books that they failed to take notice of the happening in their vicinity. It was only when the king himself entered the door and informed them that your reading would be in vain. The Prime Minister had already been appointed.

The thing that intrigues us, or should if that's not how he opened the door, is what was he doing while sitting in the corner? He was arranging his chain of thoughts. More precisely, he was removing completing the pending thoughts he had in his mind to make room for something which was extremely important. But, wait. How did he open the lock?

He didn't. There was a lock. There was a door. The question wasn't to unlock the lock at all, it only asked them to open the door. The king had cleverly used a deception trick, so the door appeared as if it was attached to the lock which you'd have to open if you really wanted to pass, but what gave its appearance wasn't the reality.

What I want you to know is that he was able to do this with the power of focus. And you should be doing this too. Concentrate at the task at hand. Don't think of a hundred things while working. Finish one first and then deftly move on to the next. I hope to see you reach something as great as our newly appointed Prime Minister's.

Gone are those days in the local vegetable markets in Bhopal, when you would be more tensed about the correctness of the vendors’ weighing scales, than your shopping list. The other day, when I accompanied my parents to the vegetable market, I found that a majority of the vegetable-sellers were selling vegetables with the help of an electronic weighing machine, instead of the traditional pan balance. I asked one of them, “How could you make it possible?”. “We have taken it on rent. Can you see that tomato vendor right there in the centre? He is the one who is giving these machines to us. He charges Rs. 20 per day.”, replied he. He added further, “And do you know, these days he has bought himself a loading auto, and he loads all these machines and gets them transported to another marketplace the next day.”

"Development." I thought at last.

And do you know friends, these people have started refusing polythene bags as well? They are asking people to carry their own cloth bags instead.

Ingredients:

Strawberries (around 5 pcs.)

Milk (250 gm.)

Sugar (7 tsp.)

Method:
1. Wash and chop the strawberries into pieces and add them into a mixer. I've used around 5-6 pieces of strawberries and removed the leaves over the fruit. You can add a few drops of essence if that's your preference but I personally like it natural.

2. Add sugar. Or don't. Strawberries have this tiny bit of a tangy flavor, if you're a person who doesn't like sweet things you can skip sugar all together. If you're diabetic or have any other diseases which hold you back in eating sugar, I strongly recommend against the urge; strawberry shakes don't taste that bad without sugar.

3. Blend the mixture for till the strawberries are mashed into very fine pieces and make sure it looks like it is in the picture.

4. Add milk and again blend the mixture.

Yes, I can understand. You're playing an awesome game. You love the game and want to save it offline. Perhaps you're going to play it later or your internet connection might be slow. The list of reasons is endless. But whatever may be the reason, there's a single solution. Go for it. Please allow me to show that to you.

Note: No software other than Mozilla Firefox is required.

The steps:

Open Firefox.

Open that favorite game and wait for it to load completely.

Save that page — File ( <kbd>CTRL</kbd> + <kbd>S</kbd> ). Remember to set the "Save as Type" to — Webpage, Complete.

Wherever you save, there will be a folder and a webpage file.

Open up the folder and look for a ".swf" file. That is your game. If there is more than one flash file, it usually is the one named the title of the game. If none are, try them all.

Open that file using any of your favorite browser — Right click, Open with ...

Enjoy the game.

Yes, they have some. Some special needs. And we need to help them.

I was watching Dynamo, Magician Impossible. Well, I like the show, and the way Dynamo interacts with the local population. I liked one thing in the episode I was watching in the afternoon, which was, I would like to explain, with the help of the reader’s patience — Due to cyclone Sandy, there were some clippings of the news, and while the Senator was speaking, a lady was subsequently repeating his message through the sign language. It was so nice! Now everyone, including the deaf, could understand what he was saying. Isn’t it good? Couldn’t we have it in our own country? Couldn’t we make sure that people with special needs are taken care of and they should be treated with affection, and why not say love? Friends, this is the time to act. Let’s work on this. Let’s make them feel they are an essential part of this community. Think about this and share your views.

HP Printers sometimes notoriously show warnings like the ‘door is open’ and stops printing documents when it isn’t actually open. This, no doubt, could've been an ongoing source of frustration. This is how you can tackle that. And yes, without downloading a thing.

Am currently using Windows 7, but if you play around, you’ll discover for yourself on how to do that on other versions. The problem is chiefly due to the fact that your Print Spooler isn’t responding. Restarting the service should solve the problem.

The steps:

Unplug the printer first (this is important).

Open up the start menu and type in "services" without the quotes. Press <kbd>Enter</kbd> key.

Wait for the services pane to open.

Find Print Spooler in the list and (single) click on it.

On the left, there will be a link to restart the service. Click on it.
When the service has been successfully restarted, the printer should start working.

Update (Steps for Windows 8.1):

Hit the Windows key to bring up the start screen. Start typing "services".

It has been quite long that I have been blogging. This blog is slowly emerging. It has crossed over one thousand (1000) page views. Thank you readers for your support. Due to lack of time I have started micro blogging. I would like to post some of the incidences that I recently came across. Here is a lesson.

During a visit to Aashima Mall, in Bhopal. On 1st November, occasion of Dhanteras. I saw some foreigners there. I wished them a happy journey to our country and of course, a happy upcoming Diwali. He asked my name. Yes, in that little conversation, he threw in a warmth of friendliness and asked my name while shaking hands with me. This, the lesson. We conversed further, but I had already got my lesson.

So friends, do not fail to ask the person's name. It can successfully make the conversation worth remembering.

It has been quite a while that I have been writing on this blog. Days have been tedious and my studies exhaustive. So I have opted for a less time consuming process, as the reader might be aware of, 'micro-blogging'. Follow me on Twitter for updates @sharma_ansh.
